Jealous Friend Mary Koyne Is Found GUILTY Of Attacking Naomi Oni With Acid

Mary Koyne, 21, pictured right of Throckmorton Road, east London was convicted today (Jan 23) of the shocking crime following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The horrific attack, carried out on December 30, 2012, in Dagenham, east London, left victim Naomi Oni, 21, scarred for life.

The court heard how Konye was dressed in an Islamic veil as she threw concentrated sulphuric over Oni.

Jurors were told that while Oni was in hospital recovering from her injuries, Konye pretended to give her a shoulder to cry on.

Dressed in black, Konye appeared to be calm when the jury of eight men
and four women delivered their guilty verdict.
Investigating officer detective chief inspector David Whellams, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "This was truly a horrific attack on the victim by someone she considered to be a friend.

Konye claimed that Ms Oni had planned the attack to get "fame and fortune and to sell her story to the paper" but the jury rejected what police called a "completely implausible story".

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams said Konye, a student from Canning Town, had carefully planned the attack.

"She has prepared for this over a number of months, even years, all resulting from a trivial, insignificant argument that everybody has in their everyday lives," he said.

"The result today will give Naomi only some comfort but she is never going to be away from the fact that she is scarred, every time she looks in the mirror she is going to be reminded of the fact but it will enable her to start to get some closure."
