The memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela was held today, on a day which also happens to be the official day of mourning.
The former wife of Nelson Mandela Winnie Madikizela-Mandela attended in which the audience were addressed by the President Jacob Zuma. In his speech President Zuma hailed the values of the country's most beloved President.
'He believed in forgiveness and he forgave, even those who kept him in jail for 27 years,' Zuma said in a eulogy. 'He stood for freedom. He fought against those who oppressed others. He wanted everyone to be free.'
Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela was pictured praying with MK members outside the former president's Houghton home. On Friday Mandla had spoken about his grandfather, describing him as the embodiment of strength, struggle and survival.
